Rose International Institute of Beauty is an institution accredited by TESDA that offers Technical and Vocational Education and Training Programs (TVET) under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The Rose Institute of Cosmetology and Pharmacy, a subsidiary of the Rose Group of Companies that owns Rose Pharmacy and Salon de Rose, is a technical-vocational school on Colon St., Cebu City that offers short courses in pharmacy service, pharmacy associate, hairdressing and beauty care.
The pharmacy service course lasts from three months to six months while the associate degree runs for two years. The beauty care courses, which include make up, hairdo, nail art, facial, body massage, foot reflex, hand spa, and waxing, can run from two weeks to about two months. The tuition for one course ranges from around P3,000 to P23,000.
The school is in a three-story building owned by the Rose Group of Companies with 12 classrooms. Since its inception, around 50 enrollees have availed themselves of the courses and most of them have already finished the beauty care program.
Rose Institute of Cosmetology and Pharmacy president and chief executive officer Brian Lim said there is a big demand for cosmetologists in the country.
Lim said most of the skilled workers in the industry are working abroad and this limits beauty centers in the country like Salon de Rose from expanding their businesses.
“What’s limiting us (Salon de Rose) from growing is not having enough skilled workers who have the aptitude for customer service and technical skills,” he said.
TESDA-7 Assistant Regional Director Buenafe Sta. Rita said there are only a few training centers for beauty care vocational courses, causing a low number in TESDA-certified cosmetologists. She said there are only two existing training centers offering the course in Cebu as it is expensive to open a new one.
Lim said Rose Institute invested P8 million for its facilities.
Salon de Rose has 28 branches nationwide, eight of which are in Cebu. Lim said the Salon is expected to double in number by 2015.
“In Salon de Rose alone, we hire 50 workers in a month that’s why we see a very big need for skilled beauty care workers today. But I think we are not the only one facing this challenge but also the other establishments like us as well,” Lim said.
Rose Institute Pharmacy Department Head Loisa Hernandez said the same problem is also facing the pharma industry. She said there is not enough pharmacy aides in the country and Rose Pharmacy needs a big number of them as it seeks to add more to its 214 branches nationwide.
Hernandez reported that only 52 percent of pharmacy course takers passed the board exam last year.
Aside from the low number, Hernandez said there is also a problem with the current practice adopted by pharma aides in the country. She said most of them do not advise buyers on the proper handling and maintenance of medicine.
Lim said all graduates of Rose Institute are guaranteed a job after they finish the course. He said Rose Institute’s affiliate companies will hire their graduates.
Rose Institute Cosmetology Director Marilyn Polo said almost all of their students who finished the beauty care course are now working in Salon de Rose
