Mary Our Help Technical Institute for Women Cebu is an institution accredited by TESDA that offers Technical and Vocational Education and Training Programs (TVET) under the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
MOH-TIW Cebu Mary Our Help Technical Institute for Women (Cebu) formerly known as Mary Help of Christians School – Women Development and Teachnology Center located in Tunghaan, Minglanilla, Cebu is the first technical vocational school of the Salesian Sisters in the Philippines. It was established in the year 1985 to answer the needs of the poor of young women of Minglanilla and the nearby localities. The technology center was originally integrated in the Basic Education Department of Mary Help of Christians School, Cebu.
Realizing the need to uplift the lives of the disadvantaged families in nearby localities, development through the provision of education became an imperative for the Salesian Sisters in Cebu. Thus, they decided to open Mary Help of Christians School which offered free night high school following a trade curriculum – training the students in dressmaking, baking, culinary arts and home management and cosmetology. The same technical-vocational training was also offered to mothers, household helpers and other young women. In order to support the operations of the free night high school and vocational training a regular-paying pre-school was also started adding the next grade or year level every year. And thus, at the start of this institution, the technical vocational school is attached to the Basic Education Department of Mary Help of Christians School. In 1991, a one-year Computer Education course and Basic Office Practice course was offered.
Since the beginning until the present, Sewing or Garments Technology has been one of the courses in the technical-vocational school. Food Technology Course was also offered to Computer Education students in 1992-1994 and this provided an income-generating source for the students’ transportation allowance. From 1993-2004 Computer Secretarial Course was offered in place of Computer Education and Basic Office Practice Courses. With the growing demand for technical vocational education a new building was built and was finished in 1998 with the help of a Spanish foundation, the Manos Unidas. This building was built to provide better facilities for the technical-vocational trainees.
The technical vocational school became a new department of Mary Help of Christians School. And thus in 1998 this was known as Mary Help of Christians School – Women Development and Training Center. Electronics and Computer Technology Course was introduced in 1999 and lasted until 2004. Another course of Electronics Technology was offered in 2001-2003 and became Industrial Electronics since school year 2003.
With the increasing needs of the Training Center that require special attention, the management decided to separate the department of the Women Development and Training Center from the Basic Education of Mary Help of Christians School and it became a new entity as Mary our Help Technical Institute for Women (Cebu), Incorporated of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians since May 2005. The management of Mary Our Help Technical Institute for Women (Cebu), Incorporated, having the desire for greater excellence, pursued and has achieved ISO Certification on October 2005.
