The University is on the process of complying with the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9001:2008. The standard sets the criteria for a quality management system, which is an internationally recognized framework for good quality management. It is in this context that USM submits itself to the system to determine whether its set of policies, processes and procedures are in place or not.

To become ISO certified, the University initially underwent the first step to quality management system which necessitated the conduct of the Training on 7S Systems of Good Housekeeping. This was held on June 22-23, 2016 at the USM Hostel. As a follow through, an awareness session was held on July 4-5, 2016 at the USM Skyroom. The executive briefing of USM top management was piloted on June 21 at the Boardroom, Administration Building to establish commitment. Other processes included the following: the management documentation review, preliminary audit, and clearance of non-conformities, all of which were aimed to identify corrective actions that would eliminate non-conformity to the quality management standard.
