Stella Maris College (formerly Holy Rosary School) in Oroquieta City, Misamis Occidental is administered by the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, a religious institute of women founded on January 6, 1877 by Helene Marie Philippine de Chappotin, better known by her religious name, Mother Mary of the Passion. Her missionaries came to the Philippines in 1912 to help in the task of evangelization and development of the Filipino youth.

Holy Rosary School was founded on June 16, 1930 by Father Henry Irwin, S.J., the parish priest of Oroquieta. He converted part of the rectory basement into a parochial school and opened the first and second grades with approximately sixty boys and girls. The Holy Rosary Parochial School made a steady growth, with one grade to educational ladder.

In June, 1937, Franciscan Missionaries of Mary took over the administration of the school and have been administering it ever since. Their mission work continued until the outbreak of World War II when the School was temporarily closed. The school reopened after the war. The High School Department was opened in June, 1946. The succeeding years saw a notable increase in enrolment, thus requiring the erection of an additional building to house the increasing population.

In response to public clamor of asking the Sisters to offer higher levels of learning, the College Department was opened on August 3, 1964, with a total number of seventy –three students enrolled in the Liberal Arts, B.S.E. and B.S.E.Ed courses. During its first year of existence, the College Department was exclusively for female students. The following year, with the approval of the proper authorities, male students were accepted and other courses were offered. In 1966, Holy Rosary School was re-christened Stella Maris College.

At present, Stella Maris College is serving the educational needs of 1,568 students from Oroquieta and the neighboring towns. Oroquieta is a very small city in Misamis Occidental, a third class province. Most of the people are poor for there is not much opportunity for employment.
