The tech giant formally unveiled the TESDA-Samsung Electronic Products Assembly and Servicing (EPAS) Training Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility that aims to empower unemployed Filipino youths by training them in the repair and maintenance of electronic products such as audio-video systems, domestic appliances, and cellular phones. It is a partner project between Samsung and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) Women’s Center.
Located in the government agency’s complex in Taguig, the Laboratory now houses two main rooms: the Electronics Servicing Laboratory, which opened in 2015, and the EPAS Training Laboratory. The former serves as a venue for general consumer electronics servicing training while the latter features a digital classroom equipped with Samsung LED screens, tools, and equipment such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air-conditioning units that trainees can dismantle, examine, and repair themselves.
“It is Samsung’s vision that young people such as the students taking their training in this center enjoy an educational environment that helps unlock their possibilities and empower them to create the future,” said Samsung President and CEO Kevin Lee. “We recognize that to achieve this, the partnership between Tesda and Samsung must ensure that our trainees learn what is relevant to the industry, and that the industry benefits from the technical skills and ideas gained from the training.”
Through this facility, Samsung’s technical contributions will be fully integrated and implemented in Tesda’s curriculum. The training program also includes modules aimed at developing the trainees’ skills, particularly when it comes to communication, teamwork, and professionalism. Moreover, it follows the Dual Training System (DTS) Law, which enables trainees to spend two months in Tesda for in-house training, and four months in Samsung accredited service centers for practical experience.
Apart from that, the long-time partners hope to improve service delivery in the local electronics industry by developing the workforce.
The Laboratory’s unveiling marks the beginning of a stronger partnership between Samsung and Tesda. “We are delighted to continue collaborating with Tesda. They have worked tirelessly to help us achieve our mission for the unemployed Filipino youth.
